As of the end of the third quarter, both BYD and Tesla boasted approximately 17% shares of the global market for fully electric cars, with BYD selling around 432,000 units compared to Tesla’s 435,000 during that period.

While BYD has been making notable inroads into international markets, its stronghold remains in China, where it commands a remarkable 35% market share in the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment, inclusive of pure battery and hydrogen-powered models. The success of BYD can be attributed to its founder, Wang Chuanfu, who transitioned from manufacturing rechargeable batteries to becoming a major player in the car industry. BYD’s strategic focus on cost reduction within the production process and its high level of vertical integration, including ownership of one of the world’s largest EV battery-making companies, has propelled the company into its current leadership position.

The year 2023 witnessed BYD reporting a remarkable 62% increase in total sales, exceeding 3 million vehicles. As the company continues to make strides, particularly in the international arena, it further solidifies its standing as a formidable competitor in the global EV market.

While much attention has been given to the intense rivalry between Tesla and BYD, analysts highlight that the most significant losers in the rapid transition to cleaner vehicles have been traditional automakers slow to adapt. The perceived “chasm” between industry leaders like Tesla and BYD and traditional original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Volkswagen, Mercedes, or Renault has become evident to consumers. Daniel Roeska, an auto analyst with Bernstein, noted that many incumbent OEMs rushed into electric vehicles without fully appreciating the extensive technological and design differences between combustion and electric vehicles.
